AAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUGHH!

SERVES ME RIGHT FOR TRYING TO DO SOMETHING DURING A WEDDING!!!! FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAK! RATS! GODDAMMIT!

Trying to change the layout to something more colorful (there's a change template page I wanted to try) and I lose all the links to the sites I like and the clique I belong to and my title and I have no time to fix it until Monday! It's like Leeka curse, I tell you, the Leeka curse!

It's so unfair! I have to go to a wedding all weekend which means I won't be able to answer email and beta read and write about Sex and the City in my blog until Monday. It's like having no internet all over again.

Anyways, I've been meaning to rant about Sara Louise Bradshaw in "Jacob Have I Loved" for ages. It's written by Katherine Paterson, who's probably the best author when it comes to slice-of-life stories for young people. Her books are beautifully written, realistic, gritty, and never ever easy. In fact, a lot of people in my Children Literature class found "Jacob Have I Love" difficult to get through.

For one thing, the main character, Louise, is not likable. She's self-absorped, insecure, angry, bitter, and honest, which I think is the worst. I have trouble reading some of Louise's more painful memories because they're so commonplace and most importantly, they're *humiliating*. There's something so horrible about seeing a girl make a fool out of herself by her own fault and I found the scenes where her sister takes all the spotlight heartbreaking. Worst thing was all these was just and appropriate. Louise didn't deserve any attention like her sister did and was rather stupid in some of the things she did,, so I can understand why people like her.

That's why I like her so much. Real people are not always neat, likable, charming people in fiction where even serial killers seem attractive. They're petty, insecure, flawed being to a point where you can't stand half of them (hell, I hate most of my aunts and uncles and cousins.) I commend Paterson for having the guts to revolve a story around such a person in an artform that insists on showing us great role models or charming villains who many of us have little in common with. Give me the unlikable-but-oh-us complex characters anyday.

And to a short Y&R point, Britney looked really pretty in today's episode. *dreamy sigh* I always did have a weak spot for blonds, though I'll take Alison, Azure, and Satsuki over them anyday.

Which reminds me, I should sign the guestbook of Alison's *wonderful* website one of these day, which I get over the urge to propose to her in it.

ACK! *falls thud* That ending of The Young and Restless!!!! Victoria has reasons to be freaked out, she does. And Britney was so cute today. I liked her perkiness. It was almost Yuzuriha-ish. Stupid Olivia. I almost wish Malcolm's insane plan works out because she deserves it. I've been dying to say this for years, so I'm saying it here: I abhor Victor Newman. What a jerk! I hope Jack Abbot *swoon* brings his company down. Big Time. Either that or Jack and Victor have a hot steamy make out session.

EVIL! See what all these yaoi fanfic and slash thoughts have been doing to me? I can't even watch basketball anymore without wanting the players to glomp each other. It's so getting out of hand.

If anyone hasn't read anything by Carl Hiaasen, I highly recommand him. He's hilarious, but angry, with a good head in social and environmental issues. And boy, is he nasty. He'd makea great Fuuma. I just finished Tourist Season and howled all the way though and then went all sappy at the end. I hate it when authors do that! Usually his books leave me chuckling at the end, but this was a whammer. I don't want to give spoilers, but it's a bloody good read with THE BEST villain I've encounter in my life. For once, the "I hate humanity" actually works. For human haters, you'll like the book, for humans lover, you'll like the book, for tree huggers, you'll love the book, and for anyone who likes nasty funny novels with depth and good characters, you'll adore this.

I got my internet connection back at home.

*shrieking with delight*

Mind you, I only get an hour a day but it means no more having to go to my friend's place to use her computer.

I'm beginning to wish I called this page "Incoherent" seeing how I think it's going to end up more bloggish than homepage-ish, as I intended it too. Don't worry, I'm not going to bore you with the (admittedly banal) details of my life, but I am going to yak a lot about shows and books and CDs I just seen/listened to, none of them coherent, probably consisting of me going, "No! Britney! Don't listen to Jill! Not her of all people!" Yes, I'm an avid fan of The Young and the Restless. Call it my guilty pleasure, amoung many. Like run off sentences and The Backstreet Boys.

And speaking of the Y&R, I like Phyllis and Britney. I always had a soft spot for bitches. When they do something good, it just means more. Like Cordelia Chase from "Buffy." Her loyalty to Xander and the Scooby gang, and later to Angel Investigations means more to me than Willow's or Giles' loyalty will. Bitches have that wonderful combination of fun, shallowness, flakiness, pettiness and meanness mixed in with insecurity and frustration and unhappiness. I really can't blame Britney for being such a bitch at Billy, and while she does deserve everything that happens to her, I still feel sorry for her. Same goes for Yui in Fushigi Yuugi. She was awful, but I still like her better than Miaka. At least she didn't make trouble for her seishis.

Anyways, I hope everyone on Y&R give Britney some slack because her character is believable and flawed and just all around awesome and I don't want her to slip into Jilldom (Jill is a bitch I *cannot* stand).

SNAPEY

I swear by the fifth book, if my intuitions are right about my boy Snape, everyone is going to worship him. Yeah, I know a bunch of people hate him, but come on, he's the only character that really has a dual personality in Hogsworth. He obviously has an evil streak but at the same time, is undyingly loyal to Dumbledore *and* Harry. Did he not save Harry's life? Even after all the ill feelings towards James Potter? It takes a big person to overcome jealousy long enough to help the person who they're jealous about. I completely admired him for that. And he's strict and no nonsense which I love! (Think McGonagall, my other favorite character.) Not to mention the fact that he hates Sirius Black, the other person I adore, and that their hate is mutual. Anyone else watch them shake hands with disgust thinking, "Good God, I want you two BOTH in bed together!?" *evil laugh*

SxK

Who was the brain washer? Alison Koh! It's HER fault. ALL HERS! (Though a certain essay from Kristin Olson helped a lot too) After reading her fanfics and her commentaries, and after four or five months of chewing on it on my own, I latched onto this couple like an army of starved leeches. I love how Subaru went through life thinking only of Seishirou, never believing there could be anything else, when life unexpectedly throws Kamui (comatose and experiencing a second childhood) in his way. So he jumps into Kamui's dreamscape on *his own accord* ^^ And of course there's that that delicious hospital scene where he holds Kamui's hand, sitting on his bed. It's so nice seeing him do something so intimate on his own for a change. Though Kamui isn't the uke by any means of the definition. There really is no uke or seme in the relationship. Let's face it, they're both lousy at taking care of each other

Which is fine with me. The two need to figure out a lot of their problems on their own. Kamui has to stop being a wimp and Subaru needs to deal with his sister's death and they both have enormous issues with their first loves. They have an astronomical amount of problems to wade through, and I don't know if it will work out between them.

But seeing how much they get out of each other and much more they develop because of it, it's worth a try. ^_^

KUSA/YUZU

You can only take so much angsty relationships before you get really fed up and irritated and need a fix on more sunnier couples that nevertheless have depth and substance that you can sink your teeth into. Kusanagi and Yuzuriha's relationship is not perfect, with them being on opposite sides, but it's certainly the relationship in X that has the best chance of working out. They're both wonderful people on their own, though severely, severely underrated (and here let me insert my immense thank to Satsuki-chan for pointing them out to me. X has been so much more fun to read since she did.) They're strong and sensible so there's none of that dependency I dislike in relationships, but they do a lot of good for each other. Yuzuriha was lonely and needed a guy who could understand her and Kusanagi did. Likewise, Kusanagi has met a person he can confide his powers to without having to worry about her thinking he's a nutcase. They're there for each other all the time, like when Inuki died. The relationship is simple, true, but there's something pure and beautiful in its simplicity. I really do hope CLAMP gives it a chance to grow.

HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS

Bravo! Bring it back! Bring it back! I only got to see half of the episodes before Bravo! pulled it off the air, but what I saw I loved. The characters are wonderful and the cases are gritty and well developed, realistic in the way that some are never solved, and some solved through the most inane ways. The show made me laugh, cry, freaked me out, and most importantly, it made me think. They dealed with topics like homosexuality, racism, and youth violence intelligently without breaking into cliches. "Every Mother's Son" is a fine example of this and truly heartbreaking. If you haven't seen this show, you're missing a lot.

Favorite episodes: The Last of the Watermen, Every Mother's Son, Crosetti, End Game 1&2, Law and Disorder, All Through the House, Nearer my God to Thee

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER

First let me get something off my chest: SPIKE! SPIKEY! *grin* I love that vamp. Okay, for those of you who haven't seen 1-3 season BtVS, you must get your hands on it somehow! This show rocks. I admit, I avoided it for a year (how I regret that) because I thought it looked stupid, but I watched one episode just worshipped it. It's smart, fun, clever, and some episodes are emotional draining. I have cried and laughed more than one in a same episode. The characters are awesome and Buffy is a heroine you can really get into. I love how they wove the school, slaying, vampire mythology, home and social life together, with tons of humour and wit and yes, angst. The show is just brilliant. Watch it.

Favorite Episode: (another difficult list) Becoming 1&2, What's my Line 1&2, Some Assembly Required, Prophecy Girl, The Witch, Lover's Walk, Earshot, Passions, Surprise

SEX AND THE CITY

My younger sister got me into this. Since I made her watch Homocide and Buffy and got her addicted, she wanted me to watch this and by the second episode, I was hooked. It's currently my favorite show on TV: smart, witty, hilarious, honest, with the most vivacious, full blooded cast since second season Buffy. Plus the dialogue is wonderful and I'm a dialogue whore. I love they interact together and watching them discuss sex, love, and men, and watching them get into one outrageous situation after another (especially Samantha. God she's insane!) The show is so much fun, I don't see how anyone can not like it.

Favorite Episode: Shortcomings

QUEEN C

Xander: You have no shame
Cordelia: Oh, like shame is something to be proud of?

LOL! I love Cordelia! I know she's a first class bitch, but she had the best insults. "You're smarter than you look. Of course you look like a retard." *snicker* I'm against school teasing and putting people down as much as the next person but I had a place in my heart for bitches in the fictional world. Plus Cordelia is much more than about putting people down. I love how the show revealed all the different layers she had, her loyalty, her toughness, her ability to be able to get along with the Scooby and stick by them when they needed her, her insecurity and confusion, and most important, how she won't take crap from no one. I wouldn't call her a role model (not by a long shot), but she's definitely someone I admire a great deal.

Favorite Angel Episode: Somnambulist

KAREN KASUMI

Also known as my biggest obsession in CLAMP. ^_^ She got me into CLAMP in the first place. I had to know Aoki said to her. I had to know what was going on with her childhood so I got off my lazy ass and went to Rabi's site for translations. And I cried. My God, I just loved her. She's so strong to be able to move on despite her loneliness and what her mother did to her, and most remarkably, she holds no malice, only love. I know she's not perfect, being a prostitute and all, but considering her circumstances, I can't blame her and it doesn't take away from her wonderful character at all. Her inability to respect and see worth in herself only makes her more real. Besides, she's far from being an angsty character who trapped in her tragedy. She's still able to hold on her own, being the only Dragon of Heaven to thrash a Dragon of Earth. And at the same time feel empathy for Nataku. She still cares greatly for a world that seem to have given her more pain and than anything, and doesn't ask for anything in return. But she does want love, there's no denying that. I hope like hell she gets it. No one deserves it more.

HOWL AND SOPHIE

Sophie: And he's sly and selfish and vain as a peacock and cowardly and you can't pin him down to anything.
Abdullah: Strange you should speak so proudly such a list of vices.
Sophie: *angrily* What do you mean- vices? I was just /describing/ Howl.
Me: HOWL! *swoon**gasp**faint* HOWL! OH MY GOD, I WANT TO MARRY HIM *NOW*! HOOOOOOOOOOOOOWLLLLLLLLlll!!!!

I have found religion! Thank you Ammie, for showing me the truth and the way. Thank you thank you thank you! When you said Diana Wynne Jones was good, you weren't kidding. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEEEE "Howl's Moving Castle." It was so much fun, more fun than Harry Potter I have to admit, and the plot is just as complicated and the twists every bit as surprising. I just love Calcifer (The Saucepan Song!) and wanted to hug him whenever he felt down, and Michael is so cute. And Sophie is one the best fictional heroines to come along in long time. She's strong and witty with an attitude, but at the same time, has her flaws and buys into things she shouldn't. Plus she has the coolest power. The way she deals with Califer and Michael and Howl are awesome! You really should read the book just for that. She's just about to knock Karen off the pedestal for "Best Fictional Female." *grin*

And Howl, oh dear, you should know how I feel about him. I love the idea of him and Sophie. They're hot tempered, witty, trying to get the best of each other, generous and willing to do anything for anyone (even Howl, though he will never admit ^^) and well, they drive each other nuts. It's a dream couple, like Scarlett and Rhett together, only Scarlett's not a bitch. The way they interact is hilarious. But the weird thing is, it isn't sweet or heartwarming AT ALL, not even an iota romantic when I think about it (I tried going back looking for "tender moments" and found *none*), and yet I'm this big puddle of mush whenever I think about them. Definitely my current favorite couple. I'm so in love with them.

Now I have to get more Diana Wynne Jones book. I HAVE to.
